Project Start at Home brought environmental awareness directly into the workplace, with the Zero Plastic Community of Sabaragamuwa University of Sri Lanka delivering an educational programme for the staff of Sofia Colombo City Hotel under the theme “Plastic-Free Homes for a Sustainable Future.” The programme focused on reducing household plastic use through practical knowledge and hands-on activities. Participants took part in an awareness session covering the 5R concept, waste management, sustainable living, and eco-friendly alternatives. Interactive activities including Plastic Hunt, Find the Alternative, a quiz, Action Plan Cards, and a Reflection Wall helped participants engage with the topic in a practical way. By connecting everyday household habits to plastic reduction, the programme encouraged participants to consider environmentally responsible choices beyond the workplace. Taking awareness into homes is one of the most meaningful ways to extend the reach of plastic reduction efforts. The project was organized and delivered by the Organizing Committee and Executive Committee of the Zero Plastic Community of Sabaragamuwa University of Sri Lanka. Want to get involved or learn more? Punchi Haritha Sihina 2.0 brought plastic awareness to young school students through an interactive and creative programme organized by ZeroPlastic volunteers. The session included a presentation on plastic awareness, followed by a hands-on creative activity where school students worked with custom worksheets featuring eco-friendly slogans such as “Save our planet.” Volunteers also hosted a storytelling session using visual posters, centred on a nature-protecting hero, and wrapped up the programme with eco-themed songs to keep the energy high. By combining learning with creativity and storytelling, the programme made environmental awareness accessible and enjoyable for younger audiences. Activities like these help introduce plastic awareness early and encourage school students to think about the world around them. Whether you work with young learners or care about environmental education, there are many ways to be part of this effort. Want to get involved or learn more? SATHKARA’2026 brought together environmental conservation and cultural heritage across two days of volunteer-led action during the annual Rathnapura Sri Maha Saman Devala Randoli Perahera on 29th and 30th July 2026. On the first day, ZeroPlastic volunteers carried out a cleanup campaign along the roads and surrounding areas ahead of the Randoli Perahera, collecting and removing plastic waste to create a cleaner environment for devotees and visitors. On the second day, the team organized a Sisil Pan Dansala, offering free refreshments to pilgrims and participants while encouraging eco-friendly practices throughout the event. The project reflected a commitment to protecting Sri Lanka’s cultural traditions in harmony with nature, reducing plastic pollution during one of the country’s valued religious and cultural celebrations, and raising environmental awareness among the public. Whether it is a cleanup or a community gathering, every effort to reduce plastic waste at large-scale events matters. Want to get involved or learn more?
