ZeroPlastic Club Launches SAYURALA Awareness Program at Modara Ananda Central College

The ZeroPlastic Movement’s ZeroPlastic club organized a school awareness project titled SAYURALA at Modara Ananda Central College in Colombo, Sri Lanka, on March 13, 2026. The project ran from 9:30 to 11:30 AM and was designed to introduce school students to the environmental and health consequences of plastic pollution while encouraging them to adopt practical alternatives.

The organizers identified schools as a strategic entry point for environmental awareness, recognizing that children often absorb new ideas quickly and carry those lessons into their homes and wider communities. The project aimed to equip school students with a clear understanding of the harm caused by plastic and to encourage them to actively reduce plastic use in their daily lives.

During the two-hour session, school students took part in an interactive program that covered the environmental and health effects of plastic pollution, practical methods to reduce plastic consumption, and eco-friendly alternatives they could begin using. The session was structured to balance educational content with engagement, aiming to hold the attention of younger participants while delivering a meaningful awareness message.

The project was developed over a focused preparation period. The team drafted its proposal on March 5, received approval on March 9, and spent the following days preparing materials and coordinating logistics before the event. A small volunteer team carried out the planning and delivery of the session on the day.

The organizers acknowledged several challenges encountered during the process. Securing school approvals required time, and working within a limited timeline added pressure to the preparation phase.
