ZeroPlastic University of Peradeniya Launches Green Beginnings 2026 for New Students

ZeroPlastic University of Peradeniya organized Green Beginnings 2026, a program aimed at promoting environmental awareness and encouraging practical steps toward reducing plastic usage. The event was held on 16th September 2026 at the Faculty of Arts, University of Peradeniya, and was attended by 350 participants from the 2024 Batch.

The program was designed to introduce incoming university volunteers to the values and objectives of the ZeroPlastic Movement and to encourage them to adopt eco-friendly habits in their daily lives. It also sought to highlight the role of individual responsibility in addressing plastic pollution.

The event was conducted in Sinhala medium to ensure clarity and accessibility for all participants. Through the program, attendees were introduced to the goals and long-term vision of the ZeroPlastic Movement and were encouraged to take practical steps toward reducing their reliance on single-use plastics. The session provided a platform for young volunteers to engage with the environmental mission of the ZeroPlastic club at the university.

The program saw active participation from the 350 attendees, who engaged with the content presented during the event. The format of the session allowed participants to develop a clearer understanding of the environmental challenges associated with plastic pollution and to consider ways they could contribute to addressing the issue within their university environment.

Green Beginnings 2026 served as an introductory point for new university volunteers to connect with the work of ZeroPlastic University of Peradeniya. By reaching a large group of participants early in their university experience, the program provided an opportunity to build awareness around plastic reduction at a formative stage.
