ZeroPlastic NDT Club Launches Pen Bin Love 2.0 to Reduce Writing Instrument Waste at ITUM

The ZeroPlastic NDT Club’s Environmental Sustainability Avenue organized Pen Bin Love 2.0, a campus sustainability initiative held on August 24th at the Goda Canteen, ITUM. The project focused on reducing plastic waste generated by used writing instruments across the university campus.

The initiative was designed to address the accumulation of plastic waste from pens, markers, and highlighters that would otherwise end up in landfills. By providing a dedicated collection point, the project aimed to encourage responsible disposal habits and promote waste reduction among the university community.

As part of the project, a designated “Pen Bin” was placed at the Goda Canteen, a convenient and accessible campus location, where university students and staff could drop off used, dried-out, or unwanted writing instruments. The collected items were then sorted by volunteers. Pens that were still functional or repairable were restored and made available for reuse, while the remaining items were directed to recycling partners for proper processing.

The project provided a practical opportunity for members of the university community to participate in waste reduction through a simple, everyday action. By offering a visible and accessible collection point, the initiative encouraged individuals to reconsider the disposal of small plastic items that are commonly overlooked in routine waste management.

Pen Bin Love 2.0 contributed to building awareness around circular habits within the campus environment. The approach of sorting collected items for either reuse or recycling demonstrated a practical model for diverting waste from landfills, while reinforcing the value of environmental responsibility in daily campus life.
