ZeroPlastic Sabaragamuwa University Hosts හරිත ධර්මාභිවන්දනා at Belihuloya Temple

The Zero Plastic Community of the Sabaragamuwa University of Sri Lanka organized හරිත ධර්මාභිවන්දනා as part of its broader හරිත වෙසක් 2026 project. The activity was held at Sri Bodhirajaramaya, Belihuloya, as one of several components carried out to mark the Vesak season in a manner that combined spiritual observance with environmental awareness.

The project was organized to celebrate Vesak in a way that was both meaningful and mindful of the environment. By linking the traditional religious observance with environmental responsibility, the Zero Plastic Community sought to encourage participants to reflect on the connection between spiritual values and care for the natural world.

හරිත ධර්මාභිවන්දනා formed one of four activities under the හරිත වෙසක් 2026 umbrella, alongside the හරිතෝදය Clean-Up Project, the සුරැකි සොබා වෙසක් ප්‍රභා Vesak Lantern Competition, and හරිත ප්‍රදීපාලෝක. Together, these activities were carried out at the temple premises, combining religious practice, community clean-up efforts, creative engagement through the lantern competition, and environmental messaging within the Vesak celebration.

ZeroPlastic volunteers from the Sabaragamuwa University took part in organizing and carrying out the activities. The project also encouraged community participation, bringing together university volunteers and members of the surrounding community at Sri Bodhirajaramaya for the observances and related environmental activities.

The value of the project lay in its approach of integrating environmental awareness into a widely observed cultural and religious occasion. Rather than treating environmental action and spiritual practice as separate concerns, the Zero Plastic Community used the Vesak period to highlight how both can reinforce each other, particularly in reducing plastic use and promoting responsible habits within a community setting.
