ZeroPlastic University of Peradeniya Launches The Green Detective Environmental Report Writing Initiative

ZeroPlastic University of Peradeniya organized “The Green Detective,” an environmental report writing initiative that invited school students and undergraduates across Sri Lanka to investigate and write about improper plastic and polythene waste disposal in their surroundings.

The project was designed to promote environmental awareness among young people and encourage them to take an active role in identifying and addressing waste disposal issues. It also aimed to develop participants’ research, observation, critical thinking, and report writing skills through a structured and practical exercise.

Participants were asked to identify locations affected by improper plastic and polythene waste disposal, examine the environmental consequences of those conditions, and propose practical solutions. The initiative provided a platform for school students and undergraduates to express their ideas and present their findings through written environmental reports. Approximately 15 to 20 participants took part in the project across both categories.

The project was open to two categories: school students and undergraduates. Each category produced three winners who were selected based on their reports. The winners received certificates and medals in recognition of their contributions.

By combining environmental awareness with research and report writing, “The Green Detective” offered participants an opportunity to engage directly with real-world environmental challenges. The initiative encouraged young people to look closely at waste management issues in their communities and consider how those problems might be addressed through informed and practical approaches.

The project reflected ZeroPlastic University of Peradeniya’s ongoing efforts to engage young people in environmental awareness and responsible waste management through accessible and skills-based activities.
