ZeroPlastic Society of Wayamba University Launches Sub Trail’26 Cleanup in Kuliyapitiya
The ZeroPlastic Society of Wayamba University of Sri Lanka carried out Sub Trail ’26 – Kuliyapitiya, an environmental initiative conducted in conjunction with World Cleanup Day. The project brought together volunteers to promote environmental awareness and encourage responsible waste management practices within the wider community beyond the university.
The initiative was organized to extend the reach of environmental action into the surrounding community. Its purpose was to raise awareness about responsible waste disposal, reduce plastic pollution, and encourage residents and volunteers alike to adopt more plastic-conscious habits in their daily lives.
During the project, ZeroPlastic volunteers took part in cleanup activities in the Kuliyapitiya area, working to remove waste and plastic litter from public spaces. The effort brought university volunteers into direct contact with the local community, combining hands-on environmental work with awareness-building around the importance of reducing plastic use and managing waste responsibly.
The initiative saw participation from ZeroPlastic volunteers who contributed their time and effort to support the cleanup. By engaging with community members and working together on a shared environmental goal, participants were able to demonstrate practical approaches to waste reduction while reinforcing the value of volunteerism and civic responsibility.
Sub Trail ’26 – Kuliyapitiya served as an opportunity for young volunteers to apply their environmental knowledge outside the university setting and contribute to a cleaner local environment. The project reinforced the importance of individual and community-level responsibility in addressing plastic pollution and waste management challenges.
