Aitken Spence Travels Partners with ZeroPlastic Movement for One Traveller, One Kilogram Initiative

A new partnership connects responsible tourism in Sri Lanka with measurable plastic waste removal through the ZeroPlastic Movement.

Colombo, Sri Lanka – 29 October 2026: Aitken Spence Travels, one of Sri Lanka’s leading destination management companies, has officially partnered with the ZeroPlastic Movement under its One Traveller, One Kilogram initiative.

The partnership introduces a simple environmental commitment: for every eligible Aitken Spence Travels traveller who visits the ZeroPlastic Impact Center in Sigiriya, the ZeroPlastic Movement commits to removing one kilogram of plastic waste from Sri Lanka’s beaches.

The partnership is announced today, with the initiative’s operational commitments beginning on 1 January 2027.

One Traveller. One Kilogram. One Movement.

Tourism brings tremendous economic and social benefits to Sri Lanka. However, growing visitor numbers also increase pressure on the natural environment, including through plastic waste.

The One Traveller, One Kilogram initiative is designed to turn tourism participation into a measurable environmental contribution.

Under the partnership, each qualifying traveller visiting the ZeroPlastic Impact Center represents a commitment to remove one kilogram of plastic waste.

When 300 Aitken Spence Travels visitors have participated, the ZeroPlastic Movement will organise a dedicated cleanup to remove 300 kilograms of plastic waste.

These activities will be documented through collection records, geo-tagged photographs and impact reports, providing transparent evidence of the environmental contribution.

Strengthening Aitken Spence Travels’ Commitment to Sustainable Tourism

Aitken Spence Travels has a long-established commitment to responsible tourism, environmental conservation and sustainable travel practices.

As a Travelife-certified destination management company with internationally recognised sustainability credentials, Aitken Spence Travels continues to integrate environmental responsibility into its tourism operations.

This partnership with ZeroPlastic Movement creates an additional opportunity to connect international travellers with practical environmental action in Sri Lanka.

It demonstrates how established tourism operators and environmental organisations can collaborate to generate measurable benefits for the destinations they serve.

Introducing Travellers to the ZeroPlastic Impact Center in Sigiriya

The ZeroPlastic Impact Center in Sigiriya provides an opportunity for international travellers to discover Sri Lankan traditional craftsmanship, sustainable alternatives to plastic and community-driven environmental initiatives.

Visitors can learn about plastic pollution, explore locally produced crafts and participate in optional hands-on experiences with local artisans.

The center also demonstrates how tourism can contribute to environmental awareness while supporting local communities.

By introducing travellers to this experience, Aitken Spence Travels helps connect responsible travel with meaningful environmental education.

From Tourism to Documented Environmental Impact

The One Traveller, One Kilogram initiative is implemented through the ZeroPlastic Movement’s nationwide volunteer network, bringing together university students, environmental volunteers and local communities.

Each registered travel partner receives a dedicated cleanup once the required traveller milestone is reached.

The initiative is provided without participation or cleanup fees for travel partners.

Rather than relying on general environmental promises, the programme is designed around a clear, measurable commitment supported by documented evidence.

Plastic removal cannot replace efforts to prevent plastic waste or eliminate tourism’s wider environmental footprint. However, it offers a practical way for the tourism industry to contribute to removing existing plastic pollution.

Through this partnership, Aitken Spence Travels and ZeroPlastic Movement aim to demonstrate how tourism can contribute directly to environmental restoration and community participation.
