ZeroPlastic Club Highlights Banana Fibre Entrepreneur in Green Hand Phase 2.0 Documentary
The ZeroPlastic Club of the Ocean University of Sri Lanka carried out Green Hand Phase 2.0, a project designed to promote eco-friendly alternatives to plastic through documentary storytelling. The project focused on highlighting the work of a local entrepreneur producing sustainable products from natural materials.
The purpose of Green Hand Phase 2.0 was to raise awareness about environmentally friendly alternatives to plastic and to encourage people to consider such products in their daily lives. The project also sought to draw attention to the role of small-scale entrepreneurs in reducing plastic pollution through practical, accessible ideas.
As part of the project, the ZeroPlastic Club produced a documentary featuring Mr. Anuruddha Ranasinghe, Chairman of Maheroo (Pvt) Ltd. The documentary highlighted his work in manufacturing sustainable products using banana fibre and leaves. Through this medium, the club was able to document and share a real example of how natural materials can serve as viable replacements for plastic-based products.
By profiling Mr. Ranasinghe and his enterprise, the project provided viewers with a concrete illustration of how everyday materials found in Sri Lanka’s agricultural landscape can be put to productive and environmentally responsible use. The documentary format allowed the ZeroPlastic Club to reach a wider audience beyond the university community, making the message accessible to the general public.
The project carried value on multiple fronts. It brought visibility to an entrepreneur working in the space of eco-friendly manufacturing, while also educating audiences about the environmental harm caused by plastic and the alternatives that already exist. Rather than presenting environmental responsibility as an abstract concept, Green Hand Phase 2.0 grounded the conversation in a real story of innovation using locally available resources.
