ZeroPlastic Movement Holds Leadership Camp Project Leadspire 2.0 in Nilwella

The Professional Development Avenue of the ZeroPlastic Movement, University of Kelaniya, held Project Leadspire 2.0, a two-day leadership development camp, on 31st October and 1st November 2026 at Blue Beach Island, Nilwella, in the Southern Province. The project brought together 32 volunteers for a program centered on practical leadership activities, teamwork, and outdoor experiences.

The project was organized to strengthen leadership skills among ZeroPlastic volunteers and to encourage deeper engagement within the movement. It also aimed to raise awareness of environmental sustainability and reduce single-use plastic pollution through hands-on environmental action.

Over the course of two days, participants took part in a series of leadership and team-building activities set in an outdoor environment. The program included a beach cleanup campaign, giving volunteers the opportunity to contribute directly to reducing plastic waste along the coastline. During the camp, participants encountered a severe storm overnight, which presented an unplanned challenge that required them to respond collectively and adapt to difficult conditions.

The 32 ZeroPlastic volunteers who attended the camp engaged actively in both the structured activities and the real-life challenges posed by the weather. The experience of navigating the storm together reinforced practical lessons in resilience, adaptability, and cooperation that extended beyond the planned program. Certificates were awarded to all participants at the conclusion of the project.

The combination of leadership training with direct environmental action gave the project a practical dimension that connected volunteer development with the environmental objectives of the ZeroPlastic Movement. The beach cleanup component provided participants with a tangible way to apply their commitment to reducing plastic pollution while developing skills relevant to organizing and leading future initiatives.
