ZeroPlastic Clubs of Ocean University and Kelaniya Unite for SUBTRAIL 26 Awareness March
The Zero Plastic Movement of the Ocean University of Sri Lanka, in partnership with the Zero Plastic Movement of the University of Kelaniya, organized SUBTRAIL ’26, a collaborative environmental awareness initiative focused on plastic pollution and responsible plastic consumption.
The project was designed to raise public awareness about the environmental harm caused by plastic pollution and to encourage more responsible approaches to plastic use. By bringing together volunteers from two universities, the initiative sought to demonstrate the role young people can play in communicating environmental messages directly to the wider community.
The initiative featured an awareness march during which volunteers carried creative placards highlighting the importance of reducing plastic waste and protecting the environment. Through these activities, participants engaged with members of the public, drawing attention to the consequences of plastic pollution and the practical steps individuals can take to limit their plastic consumption.
Volunteers from both the Ocean University of Sri Lanka and the University of Kelaniya took part in the project, working together across institutional lines to deliver a unified message. The collaborative nature of the activity gave participants an opportunity to move beyond classroom-based environmental learning and engage directly with society on a pressing environmental issue.
The initiative provided a practical platform for university volunteers to develop their capacity for public communication and community engagement on environmental topics. By organizing an activity that connected two university communities around a shared objective, SUBTRAIL ’26 demonstrated how inter-university cooperation can strengthen the reach and relevance of environmental awareness efforts.
