NISD Zero Plastic Club Transforms Campus Waste Into Flower Pots Through ReBloom 2026

The Zero Plastic Club of the National Institute of Social Development (NISD) carried out ReBloom 2026, a project focused on plastic waste reduction and creative reuse. The initiative combined waste collection, hands-on recycling, and community contribution across multiple locations, concluding with a handover at the Sigiriya Impact Center on 30 October 2026.

The project was organized to promote environmental awareness and encourage responsible waste management among volunteers. By collecting plastic and polythene waste and repurposing it into functional items, the initiative aimed to demonstrate that discarded materials can be given a second life rather than ending up in landfills or the natural environment.

The project began with a waste collection drive on the NISD campus, where volunteers gathered plastic and polythene materials. These collected items were then taken to a workshop held in Nuwara Eliya, where volunteers transformed the waste into flower pots. Plants were placed in the completed pots, turning what had been discarded packaging and plastic into practical, planted creations ready for use.

The finished flower pots with plants were handed over to the Sigiriya Impact Center on 30 October 2026. The handover provided a tangible outcome for the project, ensuring that the repurposed creations would serve a continued purpose beyond the activity itself. Volunteers who took part in the process gained direct experience in waste collection, creative recycling techniques, and the practical steps involved in converting waste into reusable products.

The project offered a clear example of how simple, hands-on approaches to plastic waste can produce visible and useful results. Rather than focusing solely on awareness in theory, ReBloom 2026 required volunteers to work through the full cycle of collection, conversion, and distribution, reinforcing the practical value of waste reduction at each stage.
