Yuthukama 3.2; The Green Dansala

As part of the “Yuthukama 3.0” campaign, the Zero Plastic University of Peradeniya took their commitment to sustainability a step further by organizing a “Green Dansala” on August 10, 2024. This initiative aimed to provide food and beverages to devotees in an environmentally responsible manner, minimizing the impact on the planet during the Esala Perahera season.

The Green Dansala was a departure from traditional practices, which often involve the use of plastic plates, cups, and other disposable items that contribute to environmental degradation. Instead, the Zero Plastic community focused on using sustainable materials. The volunteers who organized and ran the Dansala were committed to showing that it is possible to uphold cultural traditions while also protecting the environment.

Over 30 volunteers were involved in the planning and execution of the Green Dansala. Their efforts were met with overwhelming support from the community. Devotees who visited the Dansala were not only nourished physically but also educated about the importance of reducing plastic waste. Many expressed their appreciation for the initiative, with some even taking the message back to their own communities.
