Yuthukama 3.3- The Green Walk – Marching Toward a Sustainable Future
The final phase of the “Yuthukama 3.0” campaign was the “Green Walk,” a powerful display of environmental advocacy held on August 10, 2024, coinciding with the first Kumbal Perahera procession in Kandy. This event, organized by the Zero Plastic University of Peradeniya, aimed to raise awareness about the harmful effects of polythene and plastic waste, encouraging the public to adopt more sustainable practices.
The Green Walk saw the participation of over 500 students from universities across Sri Lanka. These students, united in their commitment to environmental protection, carried banners and signs that highlighted the dangers of plastic pollution. Their messages were clear: reducing plastic waste is not just an environmental issue, but a moral imperative.
As the participants walked through the streets of Kandy, they engaged with both locals and international visitors, sparking conversations about the need for a more sustainable approach to cultural and religious celebrations. The sight of so many young people coming together for a common cause had a profound impact on those who witnessed the event. Many expressed their support for the campaign, with some even joining the walk spontaneously.
The legacy of the Green Walk will undoubtedly inspire more initiatives aimed at protecting the environment for generations to come.
