The project named “Green Canopy” was held on the 1st of May, 2024, at the Mahaweli riverbank near the Sarasavi Girls’ Hostel of the University of Peradeniya. It was organized by the ZeroPlastic University of Peradeniya, focusing on the protection of the university’s biodiversity, in collaboration with the Mahaweli Authority of Sri Lanka and the Peradeniya branch of Bank of Ceylon.
With the contribution of 300 university volunteers and the Deputy Vice-Chancellor of the University of Peradeniya, Prof. Terrance Madhujith, about 200 bamboo trees were planted on the university premises, promoting the importance of sustainability. As a volunteer youth organization, we achieved success in this project, making significant efforts to improve the environment and build a better future for the next generation.
Nowadays, the promotion of environmental health is both a modern and future necessity, and everyone should support and participate in sustainable activities and practices. Trees are the breath of humanity, and we have a critical role in combating deforestation. Under the guidance of Mrs. Nishshanka Senanayake, the founder of the ZeroPlastic National Movement, ZeroPlastic University of Peradeniya made a significant contribution to creating a healthy environment.
The use of plastic and its disposal into nature is a major modern problem, so as youth, we advocate for reducing plastic usage and raising awareness of its disadvantages. Bamboo is an excellent alternative to plastic, and through our bamboo tree planting program, we promoted its use as a sustainable replacement. The silver sponsor of the project was the Peradeniya branch of Bank of Ceylon.
