Yuthukama 3.1 ; Cleaning the Sacred Premises of Temple of the Tooth

The Zero Plastic University of Peradeniya, recently took a significant step toward environmental sustainability by launching the first phase of their “Yuthukama 3.0” campaign. The initiative, which seeks to promote a Green Esala Perahera Season, began with a cleanup drive at the Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic on September 3, 2024.

For Yuthukama 3.1, Over 50 dedicated Zero Plastic volunteers participated in the cleanup, focusing their efforts on the Eth Vidiya area, which is known to accumulate significant amounts of non-biodegradable waste during the Perahera season. Armed with gloves, bags, and a determination to make a difference, these students worked tirelessly to remove plastic and polythene waste, setting a powerful example of how to maintain the sanctity of one of Sri Lanka’s most sacred sites.

The impact of this initiative was immediately visible. The volunteers managed to clear a substantial amount of waste, transforming the Eth Vidiya area into a cleaner, more welcoming environment for the thousands of devotees expected to visit during the Esala Perahera. The project not only improved the immediate surroundings but also sent a clear message to the public about the importance of environmental stewardship.

The success of this cleanup drive has already inspired other local groups and organizations to consider similar initiatives. The Zero Plastic Society hopes that their efforts will encourage more people to take responsibility for their environment, particularly during large cultural and religious events. As one volunteer noted, “If we all do our part, we can make a huge difference. This is just the beginning.”
