ZeroPlastic Pledge

ZeroPlastic Pledge for a greener Sri Lanka

Sri Lanka is more than a destination. It is a living ecosystem filled with ancient forests, wildlife, oceans, rivers, and communities that depend on nature every single day. It could be the majestic elephants roaming freely to the coral reefs beneath our waters, every part of this island deserves protection. Yet one of the biggest threats to these natural wonders continues to grow, single-use plastic.

Every year, millions of plastic items are used for just a few minutes before ending up in landfills, waterways, or the ocean. Plastic straws, disposable cups, shopping bags, and food wrappers may seem small, but their impact lasts for hundreds of years. Wildlife mistakes plastic for food, oceans become polluted, and beautiful travel destinations slowly lose their natural beauty.

Sri Lanka has already taken important steps to fight this crisis by introducing restrictions and bans on several harmful single-use plastic products. But laws alone are not enough. Real change happens when people choose to travel responsibly and become part of the solution.
As travelers, every choice matters.

Choosing to carry a reusable water bottle instead of buying plastic bottles. Saying “No Straw Please.” Using reusable bags and cups. Supporting eco-conscious hotels, cafés, and tour operators. These small actions create a powerful collective impact.

At the ZeroPlastic Movement and the ZeroPlastic Impact Center in Sigiriya, travelers are not just visitors, they become changemakers. The Impact Center is a space where people learn about sustainability, understand the global plastic crisis, and discover practical ways to reduce waste while traveling.
We invite every traveler visiting Sri Lanka to take the ZeroPlastic Traveler Pledge at the Impact Center.

By taking the pledge, you are promising to,
~ Refuse unnecessary single-use plastics
~ Respect Sri Lanka’s environment and local laws
~ Travel with low-waste habits
~ Protect wildlife and natural ecosystems
~ Inspire others to become responsible travelers

A simple pledge can create lasting change.

The future of tourism must be sustainable. The beaches we admire, the forests we explore, and the wildlife we photograph can only survive if we protect them together. Responsible tourism starts with each of us, one traveler, one choice, one action at a time.

When you visit the ZeroPlastic Impact Center, become part of the movement to protect this island.

Introducing the ZeroPlastic Commitment Standard – the world’s first certification focused solely on refusing and reducing single-use plastics.
