ZeroPlastic Kelaniya Launches Plastixit 2.0 Phase 01 at St. Joseph’s Boys’ School
The Environmental and Educational Avenue of the ZeroPlastic Movement, University of Kelaniya, conducted Plastixit 2.0 Phase 01 at St. Joseph’s Boys’ School, Colombo 10. The project was designed to raise environmental awareness among schoolchildren and promote responsible plastic use and waste management practices.
The programme was organized to educate school students about the harmful effects of plastic pollution on the environment, wildlife, and human health. It aimed to highlight the importance of reducing single-use plastics, practising proper waste segregation, and adopting habits around recycling and reusing materials.
During the project, awareness activities were carried out for students from Grades 7, 8, and 9. The sessions covered the environmental and health consequences of plastic pollution and introduced practical steps that school students could take to manage plastic waste more responsibly. Volunteers guided the participants through the importance of keeping their school environment clean and reducing unnecessary plastic consumption.
A total of 19 ZeroPlastic volunteers took part in organizing and delivering the programme. The school students who participated engaged with the awareness content and were encouraged to adopt environmentally friendly habits in their daily routines. The initiative also supported the continuation of ZeroPlastic Clubs in schools, encouraging ongoing student participation in environmental conservation activities.
The project contributed to building awareness among younger age groups about plastic pollution and its consequences. By reaching school students across multiple grade levels, the programme reinforced the role that schools can play in fostering responsible environmental practices among young people.
The EHS Department of Ansell Lanka (Pvt) Ltd, Biyagama, supported the project, contributing to the successful delivery of the programme at the school.
