Eco Loop Promotes Sustainable Waste Practices at Colombo International Book Fair
The Environmental Sustainability Avenue of ZeroPlastic Colombo Community, based at the University of Colombo, carried out a project titled Eco Loop on 4th October 2026 at the BMICH premises during the Colombo International Book Fair. The project centered on promoting responsible waste management and encouraging the public to reduce their reliance on single-use plastic.
Eco Loop was organized to address the widespread use of polythene among visitors attending one of the country’s largest public events. By engaging with the public at a high-footfall venue, the project aimed to raise awareness about the environmental harm caused by single-use plastic and to offer practical alternatives that fairgoers could adopt immediately.
During the project, ZeroPlastic volunteers collected polythene waste from visitors and distributed paper and cloth bags as replacements. This hands-on approach allowed the team to interact directly with members of the public, providing them with reusable alternatives while drawing attention to the importance of proper waste disposal and reduced plastic consumption.
The setting of the Colombo International Book Fair gave the project access to a broad cross-section of the public, including families, young people, and regular fairgoers. By offering a direct exchange of polythene for reusable bags, the volunteers were able to make the message of waste reduction tangible and accessible rather than purely informational.
The project contributed to the broader environmental objectives of the ZeroPlastic Movement by taking waste reduction efforts beyond the university campus and into a public space. Engaging with the general community at a well-attended event allowed the volunteers to reach people who may not otherwise encounter organized environmental awareness efforts, reinforcing the value of practical action alongside public education.
