ZeroPlastic Establishes New Pen Collection Point at University of Ruhuna Faculty of Humanities

The ZeroPlastic Movement’s Pen Bin Love initiative continued its work at the University of Ruhuna with the launch of Phase 2.1, a programme focused on the proper disposal and collection of used pens at the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences. The phase introduced a new collection point, recognized a volunteer contributor from the previous phase, and worked to build consistent participation in reducing plastic pen waste across the faculty.

Opening Ceremony and New Collection Point

Phase 2.1 began with a small opening ceremony held at the HSS Canteen of the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences. The ceremony marked the establishment of a new empty pen collection point at the canteen, chosen for its accessibility and high foot traffic among university volunteers and participants. The collection point was set up to make it easier for members of the faculty community to dispose of used pens responsibly rather than discarding them as general waste.

The event was attended by Mr. W.P. Nilanka Srinath, Coordinator of the Career Guidance Unit at the University of Ruhuna, and Mr. Gamunu from the same unit, whose presence and support contributed to the programme’s delivery.

A new pen collection point was established at the HSS Canteen, Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences, University of Ruhuna, to support the convenient and ongoing collection of discarded pens within the university community.

Recognizing Volunteer Contribution

As part of Phase 2.1, the winner from the previous phase of the Pen Bin Love project was selected and recognized for their contribution to pen collection efforts.
