Haritha Dhamma Pada 6 Vesak Edition: Buddhist Principles Driving Environmental Action
On 30 May 2026 the ZeroPlastic Community of the National Institute of Social Development held Haritha Dhamma Pada 6 Vesak Edition at Lewangama Sri Sadanandarama Purana Tampita Viharaya. The initiative connected Buddhist teachings with practical sustainable living practices to address the growing challenge of single use plastic pollution.
The program combined Dhamma sermon sessions with practical awareness workshops that translated moral and spiritual principles into everyday environmental choices. Sessions highlighted the hazards of single use plastics and presented simple zero plastic habits that participants can adopt at home and in school. The format encouraged dialogue and reflection, helping attendees link ethical teachings to concrete actions for waste reduction.
Community engagement was a core feature. Local students and residents attended interactive discussions and demonstrations that showcased packaging free alternatives. Eco friendly refreshments served during the event included Belimal a traditional Sri Lankan herbal beverage presented as a healthy packaging free option. This tangible example reinforced the message that sustainable choices can be culturally relevant and easy to adopt.
The event delivered measurable outcomes in awareness and behavior change. Participants left with clear, actionable practices to reduce plastic use and with greater understanding of how cultural values can support environmental stewardship. The project strengthened local capacity for grassroots conservation and inspired attendees to take responsibility for protecting nature and building a sustainable future.
