No Plastic Freshers Day Act: Encouraging Sustainable Choices at ECU Sri Lanka
The No Plastic Freshers Day Act mobilised new students at ECU Sri Lanka to rethink single use plastics and adopt practical, sustainable alternatives. Led by a group of committed student leaders, the initiative combined awareness sessions with hands on activities that demonstrated how everyday items can be replaced with eco friendly paper alternatives.
The programme opened with facilitated discussions on the environmental impacts of plastic waste, including pollution pathways and the longer term consequences for local ecosystems and global climate goals. These sessions gave participants a clear, evidence based understanding of why reducing single use plastics matters and how individual choices contribute to broader change.
Following the discussions, students participated in a practical workshop where they created useful items from paper. The activity translated theory into action by showing simple, low cost alternatives that can be adopted immediately on campus and at home. This hands on approach helped participants internalise sustainable habits and feel empowered to make changes in daily life.
The initiative achieved measurable impact in three areas: awareness, behaviour, and culture. Awareness was raised through structured conversations that highlighted the scale and consequences of plastic pollution. Behaviour change began as students experimented with and adopted paper based solutions. Cultural impact emerged as the project fostered a shared sense of responsibility and set a positive example for future intake cohorts.
By prioritising engagement and skill building, the No Plastic Freshers Day Act created momentum for longer term sustainability efforts at ECU Sri Lanka.
