On the morning of 12th May 2026, the premises of Wayamba Royal College, Kurunegala were filled with enthusiasm, teamwork and a shared passion for protecting the environment. Green Gen -Z was more than just a project, it was a meaningful step toward inspiring young minds to create a cleaner and greener future.
Beginning at 9:00 AM, over 60 dedicated volunteers gathered together with one mission to spread environmental awareness and encourage sustainable living among the younger generation. The atmosphere was filled with energy as the team prepared for a day focused on action, learning and positive change.
The program commenced with a plantation campaign, where students and volunteers joined hands to plant trees within the school premises. Each plant symbolized hope, growth and the responsibility everyone shares in protecting nature. Through this activity, students were encouraged to understand the importance of caring for the environment and preserving it for future generations.
Alongside the plantation program, an awareness session was conducted to educate students about environmental protection, reducing plastic waste and adopting eco-friendly habits in daily life. The session created meaningful discussions and inspired students to realize that even small actions can make a big difference when protecting the planet.
One of the most significant highlights of the day was the successful installation ZeroPlastic Club at the school. This marked the beginning of a long-term initiative that will continue encouraging students to take leadership in environmental activities and sustainability projects within their school community.
The success of Green Gen -Z was made possible through the dedication and teamwork of the organizing committee. The initiative was led by Chair Buddhima Mannaperuma and Co-Chair Nishagi Dasanayake, whose leadership guided the project from beginning to end. The smooth organization of the event was supported by Secretary Mandira Jayakody, Assistant Secretary Rahma Rahmath and Treasurer Isini Gunasinghe.
The creative storytelling and written content of the project were beautifully handled by content writers Kasuni Chamika and Danoja Indumini, while the visual creativity of the initiative was brought to life by graphic designers Vojithma Karunarathne and Nitharsini Wilfred Pakkiyarathees. The successful coordination of activities throughout the event was managed by event coordinators Vishmi Oshadi, Usha Kesavan, and Samadhi Dissanayake. In addition, PR Coordinator A.R. Janusha played a vital role in connecting the project with the audience and spreading its message effectively.
As the program concluded at 11:00 AM, the smiles, memories and inspired hearts reflected the true success of the initiative. Green Gen -Z proved that when young people come together with purpose and passion, they can create meaningful change for the environment and for future generations.
Through every tree planted and every student inspired, Green Gen -Z left behind a powerful reminder, a greener future begins with the actions we take today.
