ZeroPlastic Colombo Community Donates 1,000 Books to Pitipana Maha Vidyalaya Through Project සාක්ෂර
The Professional Development Avenue of ZeroPlastic Colombo Community, University of Colombo, organized a project titled සාක්ෂර on 25th September 2026 at Pitipana Maha Vidyalaya. The project focused on supporting school students’ access to educational resources and providing awareness on higher education opportunities in Sri Lanka.
The initiative was designed to enhance the school’s library resources and encourage a culture of reading and lifelong learning among school students. It also sought to help young learners understand the educational pathways available to them beyond school.
As part of the project, 1,000 books were donated to the school library at Pitipana Maha Vidyalaya. In addition to the book donation, an awareness session on higher education opportunities in Sri Lanka was conducted. Dr. Thakshila Dharmapriya, Lecturer at the Department of Environmental Technology, University of Colombo, led the session, providing school students with information about academic pathways and future educational options available to them.
The awareness session gave school students an opportunity to learn about higher education and consider their potential academic directions. The book donation, meanwhile, contributed directly to strengthening the school library’s collection, supporting both classroom learning and independent reading among the school’s students.
The project reflected the Professional Development Avenue’s focus on fostering knowledge and supporting educational development within communities. By combining resource provision with practical guidance on higher education, සාක්ෂර addressed both immediate learning needs and longer-term academic awareness for the students of Pitipana Maha Vidyalaya.
Through projects such as සාක්ෂර, ZeroPlastic Colombo Community continues to engage with communities beyond environmental initiatives, extending its volunteer-driven efforts to support educational development and youth empowerment in Sri Lanka.
