Successful Awareness Program on ZeroPlastic Movement and Volunteerism Held at OUSL Kandy Regional Centre
On 9th January, The Kandy regional centre of the Open University of Sri Lanka (OUSL) hosted a dynamic awareness program aimed at promoting the ZeroPlastic Movement and fostering volunteerism within the community. Organized by the ZeroPlastic Community of OUSL, the event commenced at 10.00A.M. and saw enthusiastic participation from undergraduates of OUSL, academic & non-academic staff alike.
Mr. Nishshanka De Silva, esteemed founder of the ZeroPlastic Movement, graced the occasion as the distinguished guest speaker. His insightful keynote address highlighted the pressing need to reduce plastic usage and emphasized the pivotal role of volunteer efforts in achieving sustainable environmental practices.
The event was meticulously coordinated by Tharinduni Peramuna, the dedicated project head as well as the President of ZeroPlastic OUSL who spearheaded the initiative at the regional centre. “Our goal was to not only raise awareness but also inspire actionable change within our community,” remarked Tharinduni, reflecting on the program’s objectives.
Attendees were treated to engaging presentations, interactive sessions, and practical demonstrations on eco-friendly alternatives to plastic. Discussions ranged from the environmental impact of plastic waste to strategies for effective community engagement in sustainability initiatives.
