Project Start at Home brought environmental awareness directly into the workplace, with the Zero Plastic Community of Sabaragamuwa University of Sri Lanka delivering an educational programme for the staff of Sofia Colombo City Hotel under the theme “Plastic-Free Homes for a Sustainable Future.” The programme focused on reducing household plastic use through practical knowledge and hands-on activities. Participants took part in an awareness session covering the 5R concept, waste management, sustainable living, and eco-friendly alternatives. Interactive activities including Plastic Hunt, Find the Alternative, a quiz, Action Plan Cards, and a Reflection Wall helped participants engage with the topic in a practical way. By connecting everyday household habits to plastic reduction, the programme encouraged participants to consider environmentally responsible choices beyond the workplace. Taking awareness into homes is one of the most meaningful ways to extend the reach of plastic reduction efforts. The session covered the 5R concept, waste management, sustainable living, and eco-friendly alternatives to everyday plastic items. Participants also took part in hands-on activities including a Plastic Hunt, Find the Alternative, an Interactive Quiz, an Action Plan Card, and a Reflection Wall, each designed to connect awareness with real household practices.
By focusing on what people can change at home, the programme moved the conversation beyond theory and into daily decision-making. It is a strong example of how university-led volunteer teams can extend environmental education into professional and community spaces.
