Empowering Change: A Successful Awareness Program in Collaboration with John Keells Group
The ZeroPlastic Community of The Open University of Sri Lanka proudly hosted a successful social entrepreneurship and environmental awareness program in partnership with John Keells Group under the initiative Plasticcycle. Held on 23rd May 2025 at the Kandy Regional Centre premises, this event brought together students, faculty, and sustainability advocates to take a meaningful step toward a plastic-free future.
The event featured an insightful session on sustainable practices, plastic waste management, and the importance of social responsibility in environmental conservation. Representatives from John Keells Group delivered a powerful presentation on their Plasticcycle initiative, sharing their strategies to reduce single-use plastics and empower community-led recycling.
In addition to the awareness session, specially designed bins for plastic bottle collection were officially placed at the Kandy Regional Centre and other key locations around Kandy, marking a proactive move in managing waste responsibly. Notably, one of the bins was completely filled within just three days—clearly highlighting the necessity of such infrastructure and the community’s enthusiasm to contribute to sustainable change.
The ZeroPlastic Community of Open University of Sri Lanka extends heartfelt gratitude to the John Keells Group for their collaboration and support. Together, we continue to pave the way for a cleaner, greener Sri Lanka—one action at a time.
