The ZeroPlastic Society of Wayamba University of Sri Lanka carried out the Kalyani EarthCare cleanup project on August 16, 2026, in the Inamaluwa area of Sigiriya. Organized in partnership with the Kalyani Foundation, the project brought together volunteers for a focused environmental cleanup effort around one of Sri Lanka’s most recognized heritage areas.

The project was designed to address plastic pollution and waste accumulation in the vicinity of Sigiriya, an area known for its ecological and cultural significance. By targeting waste in this high-biodiversity landscape, the initiative aimed to reduce localized pollution while drawing attention to the importance of responsible environmental practices in and around heritage sites.

The cleanup operation covered a route that began at Kalyani School in Rotawewa and concluded at the Impact Center in Sigiriya. Along this stretch, ZeroPlastic volunteers collected and removed plastic waste and other refuse that had accumulated in the surrounding environment. The Dambulla Pradeshiya Sabha supported the effort by assisting with waste collection during the project.

Volunteers from Wayamba University participated directly in the field activities, carrying out the physical work of gathering and sorting waste across the designated area. The project also incorporated a community engagement element, with the cleanup serving as a visible demonstration of environmental responsibility to residents and visitors in the area.

The activity contributed to a cleaner immediate environment around Sigiriya while offering the participating volunteers practical experience in organized environmental action. For the local community, the project reinforced the connection between everyday waste management and the preservation of natural and cultural landscapes. The effort also helped highlight the role that university-based environmental groups can play in addressing pollution outside urban centers.
