ZeroPlastic Club Launched at Sumangala College, Kandy — Empowering the Next Generation of Environmental Leaders
We are proud to announce the official launch of ZeroPlastic – Sumangala College, Kandy — a major step forward in our mission to create a plastic-free Sri Lanka. This milestone marks the beginning of a new era where school students become active changemakers in their own communities through the ZeroPlastic School Club Network.
Why School Clubs?
The ZeroPlastic Movement has already seen tremendous success at the university level, with active clubs operating across campuses island-wide. Now, we are taking that energy, passion, and proven model to schools — empowering students from an even younger age to lead environmental action in their own surroundings.
Our school clubs aren’t just symbolic. They are well-structured, guided initiatives that allow students to plan and implement real-world projects aimed at reducing plastic pollution. Every school club is paired with a ZeroPlastic University Club for continuous mentorship and collaboration, ensuring that students gain exposure to higher-level sustainability projects and leadership experiences.
Sumangala College & The Open University of Sri Lanka
The newly launched club at Sumangala College, Kandy, will be mentored and supported by the Open University of Sri Lanka, which will serve as its official parent club. This means that Sumangala students will work closely with university students, benefit from their expertise, and take part in joint campaigns and nationwide activities.
This intergenerational mentorship model sets our movement apart — giving school students direct access to university projects, resources, and networks. It’s a hands-on opportunity to learn, grow, and lead.
