Sustain Session 3.2: Wings to Protect – Plastics and their Effect on Bees and Insects

Sustain Session 3.2: Wings to Protect – Plastics and their Effect on Bees and Insects

On May 31st, 2025, Rajarata – Zeroplastic successfully conducted second session under its Sustain Series 3.0. The session, titled “Wings to Protect: Plastics and their Effect on Bees and Insects,” focused on the hidden dangers of plastic pollution to insect life, especially bees, which play a vital role in pollination and the balance of ecosystems.

This online event took place via Zoom from 7:00 pm to 8:00 pm and brought together undergraduate students across the country. The guest speaker was Dr. U.G.A.I. Sirisena, a Senior Lecturer in Entomology at the Faculty of Agriculture, Rajarata University. With his background in Entomology, Dr. Sirisena shared clear and research based information about how plastics—especially microplastics—can enter insect habitats and negatively affect their health and survival.
He explained how plastic waste in the environment can interfere with the feeding, reproduction, and navigation of insects.
Bees, which are essential for food production through pollination, are at particular risk. The session highlighted that protecting these tiny creatures is key to protecting our entire food system and environment.Furthermore, Dr. Sirisena appreciated ZeroPlastic Movement working towards environmental susustainability.

Participants were encouraged to think about the long-term impact of everyday plastic use and to take simple steps to reduce plastic waste in their lives. The session ended with a short discussion where attendees shared their thoughts and asked questions. This event showed how education and awareness can lead to positive change. ZeroPlastic continues to be a platform for meaningful conversations about sustainability and environmental protection.
