ZeroPlastic Environmental Awareness Program Successfully Conducted at Sugathapala Godawatha Secondary School
The “LeafLine – Phase 1.1”environmental awareness program organized by the ZeroPlastic Club of the University of Ruhuna was successfully conducted on 14th May 2026 at Sugathapala Godawatha Secondary School, Kahagala, Kamburupitiya, with the active participation of around 30 students and teachers. The program commenced at 9.00 a.m. with the objective of creating awareness among school students about the harmful effects of single-use plastics and the importance of adopting environmentally friendly practices in daily life.
The awareness session mainly focused on plastic pollution, proper waste management, and sustainable alternatives to single-use plastics. Interactive discussions and educational activities were conducted to improve students’ understanding of environmental protection and encourage them to practice eco-friendly habits within their daily routines.
Students actively participated throughout the program by sharing their ideas and answering ZeroPlastic-based questions related to reducing single-use plastic usage. Small prizes were awarded to students who answered correctly, which created an enjoyable, motivating, and educational atmosphere during the session. The interactive activities helped students to engage more confidently while learning practical methods to protect the environment.
The program was organized successfully through strong teamwork, dedication, and proper coordination. Educational and awareness materials were prepared to support the session, while event coordination, financial arrangements, creative designs, and promotional activities were managed efficiently to ensure the smooth execution of the program.
The awareness session was conducted in an engaging manner, allowing students to understand the importance of environmental responsibility and sustainable living practices. Teachers and students showed great enthusiasm and positive participation throughout the event, making the program both meaningful and successful.
Overall, the ZeroPlastic environmental awareness program was successfully completed with positive feedback from participants while effectively promoting environmental awareness, responsible waste management, and the reduction of single-use plastics among the school community.
