Green Sri Lanka Phase 01

Green Sri Lanka Phase 01

On the 18th and 19th of May 2024, Zero Plastic Movement University of Kelaniya launched “Green Sri Lanka – Phase 01,” focusing on cleaning up Adam’s Peak collaborated with Rotaract Club of University of Kelaniya. The project saw enthusiastic participation from volunteers and organizing committee members, who conducted comprehensive clean-up activities to address litter and waste. Additionally, they improved safety and accessibility by installing new light bulbs along the pathway to Adam’s Peak, enhancing visibility for visitors.

Through this project, the University of Kelaniya’s Zero Plastic Movement aimed to promote continuous community involvement, environmental accountability, and greater awareness of sustainability. The primary objective was to tackle plastic pollution and
transform the area into a plastic-free zone. The project addressed the
growing environmental concern of plastic waste accumulating in this sacred
pilgrimage site. Through focused collection efforts, the project aimed to not
only remove existing plastic debris but also raise awareness among visitors
and local communities about responsible waste management practices.

Our main objectives are in here, make a Zero Plastic Nation, maintain cleanliness at Adam’s Peak, protect the country’s nature, to make a change of society behaviors, build up and maintain interpersonal relationships with fellow and leading the generation of zero plastic fashion among the youth community.

This project has had a profound and positive impact on the environment of
this revered pilgrimage site. The increasingly prevalent issue of plastic
pollution had regrettably begun to tarnish the natural splendor of the mountain. Through meticulous and thorough efforts, the project
successfully removed various forms of plastic debris, including bottles,
wrappers, and other synthetic materials, which unquestionably enhanced
the ecological purity of the pilgrimage path. Consequently, this has resulted
in a more immaculate and unspoiled environment for the devoted pilgrims
as they embark on their spiritual quest. The significant reduction in plastic
waste promotes a deeper connection with the natural world and fortifies the
sanctity and reverence associated with Adam’s Peak.
