Eco Spark brought environmental awareness and youth leadership training to Sri Dhammarakkitha Dhamma School on June 21, led by ZeroPlastic University of Peradeniya and supported by a Resource Person, a University Lecturer.

Leadership begins with responsibility and positive action.

The daylong initiative combined practical guidance with a clear call to action. Students learned how plastic pollution harms the environment and were shown simple steps to reduce single use plastic in daily life. The program emphasised that change starts with individual choices and grows through peer influence.

Organisers appointed student leaders to drive local action inside the Dhamma school. The Resource Person delivered an encouraging session that focused on responsibility, teamwork, and leadership. The approach aimed to build confidence among students and equip them to motivate classmates to adopt sustainable habits.

Feedback from the Dhamma school community was highly positive. Participants described the event as inspiring, educational, and impactful in promoting a more environmentally conscious Dhamma school culture. The project raised awareness about plastic pollution while developing practical leadership skills among young people.

The activity aligns with broader goals for sustainable development, notably SDG 12: Responsible Consumption and Production and SDG 4: Quality Education. By combining environmental education with youth empowerment, the project reinforces how schools can shape long term behaviour for a cleaner environment.

ZeroPlastic University of Peradeniya said the Eco Spark event is a step toward nurturing local champions for a zero plastic future and inspiring similar work across other Dhamma schools and communities.
