Haritha Piyasariya Phase 02: ZeroPlastic University of Ruhuna and Prajava Gama Empower Mawella with Practical Plastic Waste Awareness

Mawella Village hosted Haritha Piyasariya Phase 02 on 20 June 2026, organised by the ZeroPlastic University of Ruhuna Club with support from the Prajava Gama Foundation established by Halcyon Mawella Boutique Hotel.

The programme was held after organisers responded to complaints from foreign visitors about the smell from burning plastic and a local need for better waste management knowledge. The event was originally scheduled for 18 June 2026 but was postponed to 20 June 2026 when officers of the Prajava Gama Foundation could not attend the original date.

Project Head K.M.G.G.D.S. Kumari led the initiative with support from Deputy Project Head R.M.K.D. Abeyrathne. The organising team handled planning, participant coordination, logistics, financial arrangements, educational content and event documentation to ensure the programme ran smoothly.

Participants gained practical knowledge and simple steps they can use to manage plastic waste more safely.

The session covered the causes and impacts of plastic pollution, proper waste segregation, recycling options, responsible waste management and the health and environmental harms of burning plastic. Interactive discussions provided practical, community level solutions and promoted environmentally friendly alternatives to single use plastics.

Village residents, club volunteers and representatives of the Prajava Gama Foundation attended. At the conclusion of the programme certificates were presented to the ZeroPlastic University of Ruhuna Club volunteers in recognition of their contribution.

The programme advances SDG 12: Responsible Consumption and Production, SDG 4: Quality Education and SDG 17: Partnerships for the Goals by building local knowledge, strengthening youth led action and deepening community partnerships for sustainable waste management.

Haritha Piyasariya Phase 02 strengthened community participation in environmental conservation and laid a practical foundation for future collaboration between the ZeroPlastic University of Ruhuna Club and the Prajava Gama Foundation.

Introducing the ZeroPlastic Commitment Standard – the world’s first certification focused solely on refusing and reducing single-use plastics.
