ZeroWave 26 Phase 2.2: ZeroPlastic Club Orientation at the University of Ruhuna – Inspiring a Plastic Free Future

New students at the Faculty of Technology at the University of Ruhuna were welcomed into a call for action on plastic reduction at an orientation organised by the ZeroPlastic Club. The event introduced the club, its vision and current initiatives and urged students to adopt plastic free practices throughout their university journey.

The ZeroPlastic Club led the session to introduce its mission, past achievements and upcoming projects. New students were shown clear ways to get involved, including membership opportunities and practical activities that support campus sustainability.

The programme was honoured by the presence of Mr. H.A.C. Priyankara. He delivered an inspiring talk that emphasised environmental responsibility, student leadership and the value of community engagement as tools for lasting change.

Organisers used the orientation as a platform to turn interest into action. The session linked environmental stewardship to youth empowerment by positioning students as drivers of campus level change. The initiative supports wider goals of education and sustainable consumption, notably SDG 4: Quality Education and SDG 12: Responsible Consumption and Production.

The orientation provided a clear welcome to the new intake and a straightforward invitation to become active members of the ZeroPlastic Club and contribute to ongoing conservation activities.

Introducing the ZeroPlastic Commitment Standard – the world’s first certification focused solely on refusing and reducing single-use plastics.
