On 20 June 2026 residents of Mawella Village, representatives of the Prajava Gama Foundation and volunteers from the ZeroPlastic University of Ruhuna Club carried out a coordinated community cleanup and waste segregation drive that cleared public spaces and roadside areas.
The campaign was fully sponsored by the Prajava Gama Foundation, a community initiative established by Halcyon Mawella Boutique Hotel. The programme was originally scheduled for 19 June but was postponed to 20 June 2026 due to the unavailability of foundation officers.
Work was organised for maximum local impact. Village roads were divided into six sections and participants formed six teams to collect improperly discarded waste from public areas and along the roadside. Teams focused on removing visible litter and sorting items for proper disposal.
After the cleanup, separate waste bins for plastic waste and glass bottles were installed at two public locations. The new bins are intended to encourage waste segregation, support recycling practices and promote longer term waste management within the village.
An environmental awareness programme followed the fieldwork, giving residents practical guidance on how to reduce waste and separate recyclables. Volunteers from the university club played an active role in mobilising neighbours and sharing the message, showing clear youth engagement in local conservation.
This community-led effort connects to broader sustainability priorities. It advances SDG 12: Responsible Consumption and Production by promoting better waste handling and recycling. It also reflects SDG 17: Partnerships for the Goals through collaboration between local residents, a community foundation and volunteer groups.
Haritha Piyasariya Phase 03 succeeded in improving the cleanliness of Mawella Village, strengthening community participation in environmental conservation and promoting responsible waste management, laying the groundwork for a cleaner, greener and more sustainable local environment.
