Six pathways

Choose Where Your Contribution Fits

Each pathway leads to a different kind of placement. Tell us which interests you and we will match it against what is actually running while you are in Sri Lanka.

Pathway one

Volunteer at the Impact Center in Sigiriya

Support the day-to-day mission of the ZeroPlastic Impact Center, the movement's visitor-facing home near Sigiriya, where plastic alternatives and Sri Lankan craftsmanship are shown to travellers every day.

Where you might contribute

  • Supporting visitor experiences
  • Helping promote sustainable Sri Lankan products
  • Assisting with responsible tourism activities
  • Supporting environmental education
  • Helping document stories and impact
  • Supporting communications and digital content
  • Assisting with events and community engagement
  • Contributing professional skills where relevant

Suits: volunteers who enjoy working with people, are comfortable in a visitor-facing setting and can commit to a consistent weekly rhythm. Placements are matched to current operational needs and to your experience.

Pathway two

Support local artisans

ZeroPlastic works with 249 local artisan families. This pathway is a skills exchange: you bring capabilities their businesses can use, and you learn craft and enterprise from people who have practised it for years.

Where you might contribute

  • Product storytelling
  • Photography and content
  • Digital marketing
  • English communication
  • Packaging and presentation
  • Business development
  • Market research
  • Responsible tourism
  • Product documentation
  • Digital skills

Suits: volunteers with a practical skill a small enterprise can apply, and the patience to work at the pace of a working household. Placements are arranged only after suitability, consent, safeguarding and logistical review.

Pathway three

Join environmental action projects

Work on the environmental campaigns the movement is running while you are here, from coastal cleanups to university chapter programmes and the reporting that turns a day of work into evidence.

Where you might contribute

  • Plastic cleanups
  • Community awareness
  • Environmental education
  • Plastic-reduction campaigns
  • University initiatives
  • Project documentation
  • Impact reporting
  • Research
  • Community engagement

Suits: volunteers who want to be on the ground and can travel to where a project is running. Specific activities, dates and locations depend on currently approved projects, so a cleanup or tree-planting day cannot be guaranteed for every date.

Pathway four

Work with ZeroPlastic university clubs

Work alongside young environmental leaders through ZeroPlastic university clubs across Sri Lanka. International volunteers can be matched with a suitable university-based team and contribute to environmental projects, campaigns and student-led initiatives already taking place.

Where you might contribute

  • Environmental awareness and education
  • Plastic-reduction campaigns
  • Community projects
  • Project planning
  • Problem solving
  • Communications and social media
  • Event and campaign development
  • Research
  • Impact documentation
  • Leadership development
  • Sharing professional experience

Rather than creating a separate activity for international volunteers, you join existing student teams and contribute where your skills can create genuine value.

Suits: volunteers interested in youth leadership, universities, environmental education, sustainability, communications, project management, research or community engagement. Placement depends on location, dates, current university activity, suitability and project availability.

Pathway five

Volunteer with the Volunteers Academy

Help strengthen practical skills across Sri Lanka through the Volunteers Academy, a capacity-building initiative of the ZeroPlastic Movement. The Academy's work can support schools, universities, educational institutions, government offices, community groups and volunteers, developing skills useful in education, careers, volunteering and community leadership.

Where you might contribute

  • Problem solving
  • Critical thinking
  • Digital literacy
  • Technology
  • Communication
  • Presentation skills
  • Emotional intelligence
  • Leadership
  • Teamwork
  • Financial literacy
  • Entrepreneurship
  • Career readiness
  • English and professional communication
  • Project management
  • Training
  • Curriculum development
  • Mentoring

International volunteers can contribute as trainers, mentors, programme developers or subject-matter experts, working with school students, university students, young volunteers, educational institutions, government-sector teams and community groups.

Suits: teachers, trainers, professionals, university students, entrepreneurs, mentors and people with specialist knowledge they can share. Placement depends on which programmes are approved and running during your stay.

Pathway six

Support sustainable tourism in Sigiriya

Be based at the ZeroPlastic Impact Center in Sigiriya and work with the local tourism sector to help one of Sri Lanka's most important tourism destinations reduce plastic and strengthen practical sustainability. Volunteers may engage with hotels, homestays, villas, restaurants, cafes, tour operators, tourism-related businesses and relevant local institutions.

Where you might contribute

  • Visit tourism businesses
  • Identify sources of single-use plastic
  • Recommend practical plastic-reduction measures
  • Help identify sustainable alternatives
  • Support simple sustainability action plans
  • Conduct staff awareness sessions
  • Support responsible waste practices
  • Document improvements and good practices
  • Sustainability communications
  • Responsible-tourism marketing
  • Relationship building
  • Research and data collection

This is support and education, not auditing or certification. Volunteers do not certify businesses. They can also help tourism businesses understand how genuine sustainability improvements can strengthen their reputation and responsible-tourism marketing.

Suits: volunteers interested in sustainable tourism, hospitality, environmental management, sustainability, business, marketing, communications or community engagement.

Who you would be joining

A Sri Lankan movement, built and led by young people

ZeroPlastic Movement is Sri Lanka's largest youth-led environmental initiative and a government-registered non-profit organization established in 2021. The work happens through clubs, campaigns and community projects across the country.

International volunteers are not a separate programme running alongside that work. You join the teams already doing it, contributing where there is a genuine need and where your skills and available time actually fit.

Volunteer opportunities depend on current project needs, location, availability and suitability. That is why every application is reviewed individually rather than booked from a calendar.

Why volunteer with ZeroPlastic

More than a volunteer placement

Join a nationwide environmental network.

When you volunteer with ZeroPlastic, your placement is only one part of the experience. You become connected to a nationwide network of more than 12,000 volunteers working through environmental projects, university clubs, schools, communities, institutions and local partnerships across Sri Lanka.

Alongside your primary placement, you may choose to participate in other ZeroPlastic projects taking place during your stay, depending on your interests, location and project availability.

12,000+ volunteer network

Connect with young volunteers and environmental leaders across Sri Lanka.

University network

Work alongside ZeroPlastic university clubs and student-led environmental initiatives.

Schools and education

Support environmental education and skills-development programmes involving schools and educational institutions.

Communities and artisans

Connect with local communities and ZeroPlastic's network of 249 artisan families where appropriate.

Tourism sector

Through the Sigiriya programme, engage with hotels, homestays, villas, cafes, restaurants and tourism businesses working toward more sustainable practices.

Ongoing environmental projects

Opt into additional ZeroPlastic campaigns and environmental activities taking place during your stay.

Access is never automatic. Which universities, schools, businesses, communities and projects you can work with depends on programme needs, location, availability and suitability, and on what is actually running while you are in Sri Lanka.

Beyond your placement

Your placement is only the beginning

Whatever pathway you choose, you can also connect with ZeroPlastic's wider network of 12,000+ volunteers across Sri Lanka.

Depending on your interests, location, schedule and current project availability, you may have opportunities to participate in environmental campaigns, university activities, community programmes, awareness projects and other ZeroPlastic initiatives outside your primary placement. Participation is optional.

  • 12,000+ volunteer network across the movement.
  • University clubs running their own environmental programmes.
  • Environmental projects and campaigns active during your stay.
  • Schools and education programmes where these are running.
  • Community initiatives in the areas around your placement.
  • Artisan network of 249 families, where a visit or project is appropriate.
  • Tourism-sector sustainability activities, mainly around Sigiriya.

None of this is guaranteed. These are opportunities that may be open to you, not a fixed itinerary, and they depend on what is running and on suitability.

Use your skills for impact

The most useful thing you bring is what you are already good at

Physical help on a cleanup matters. So does a week of someone who can photograph a product range properly, or rewrite a producer's English product descriptions. Tell us your skills and we will look for where they are genuinely needed.

The programme base

Sigiriya, where the Impact Center sits

The ZeroPlastic Impact Center is located near Sigiriya, in Sri Lanka's cultural triangle. It is the base for both the Impact Center pathway and the Sustainable Tourism pathway, and the point where the movement's work meets the people travelling through the country.

Sigiriya itself needs little introduction: the rock fortress, the surrounding forest and the villages and farmland around it. Living and working here for a few weeks is a different experience from passing through for an afternoon.

The other four pathways are located according to where the work actually is. Artisan placements may be around Sigiriya or elsewhere, depending on the partner families involved. University club placements depend on which club and university has suitable activity running. Volunteers Academy placements depend on the active school, university, institution, government or community programme. Environmental action projects vary across Sri Lanka.

This is not a touring programme. You are based in one place for your placement, and ZeroPlastic does not provide travel between regions.

Volunteer across Sri Lanka

Where can you volunteer in Sri Lanka?

Your placement does not have to look the same as another volunteer's. Depending on your dates, skills and the projects currently running, opportunities may be based in Sigiriya, Colombo, local communities or environmental projects elsewhere in Sri Lanka.

Volunteer in Sigiriya

The ZeroPlastic Impact Center near Sigiriya can be your volunteer base. Depending on current needs, you may support environmental education, visitor engagement, responsible tourism activities, communications, digital content and community projects connected to the Center.

Placements may also combine time at the Impact Center with approved artisan or community projects in the surrounding area.

Volunteer in Colombo

When suitable projects are active, volunteers may contribute to ZeroPlastic initiatives in and around Colombo, including environmental campaigns, community awareness, university activities, communications, project documentation and other movement programmes.

Availability depends on the projects running during your travel dates.

Volunteer with local communities and villages

Some placements involve working alongside artisan families and community-based projects.

Depending on your skills, you may help with photography, storytelling, product presentation, packaging, English communication, marketing, digital promotion, research or practical business support.

These placements take place only where there is a genuine need, with community or artisan consent, and they are designed to support local people rather than replace local employment.

Volunteer in environmental projects

ZeroPlastic runs environmental activities across Sri Lanka.

Depending on current projects, volunteers may contribute to plastic cleanups, environmental awareness, plastic-reduction campaigns, university initiatives, community engagement, research, project documentation and impact reporting.

Projects, dates and locations vary, so individual activities cannot be guaranteed before your placement is reviewed.

Not sure where to volunteer?

Tell us your travel dates, skills and the kind of contribution you want to make. We will review what is running during your visit and recommend the locations and projects that best match your interests and experience.

Accommodation and daily life

Live locally while you volunteer

International volunteers stay in a selected local homestay or with a host family, not in a hotel or a volunteer dormitory.

What your stay includes

  • A private room
  • Breakfast, lunch and a light dinner every day
  • Wi-Fi where available
  • Airport pickup on arrival

Your three daily meals

  • Breakfast. Sri Lankan or Western style, depending on host availability.
  • Lunch. A traditional Sri Lankan lunch.
  • Dinner. A lighter Sri Lankan-style evening meal.

Accommodation standards vary between homes because this is a local homestay experience rather than a hotel stay. Expect basic, clean, private accommodation in a real Sri Lankan household. Tell us about any dietary or accessibility needs on the application form and we will match you accordingly where we can.

Please read before applying

Local transport is not included

Daily transportation between your accommodation, volunteer placement and other programme activities is not included in the programme fee. Volunteers pay their own local transport costs.

ZeroPlastic will help you understand the available transport options and, where needed, can connect you with known local taxi or tuk-tuk coordinators and available ride-hailing services. ZeroPlastic does not operate a transport service, and local drivers are not employees of ZeroPlastic.

Personal sightseeing and weekend travel are also excluded and arranged by you.

Why do volunteers pay a programme fee?

Volunteering your time does not remove the real cost of hosting an international participant. Accommodation, meals, airport pickup, programme coordination, placement matching, orientation, administration and local support all have direct costs.

The programme fee allows ZeroPlastic, as a nonprofit, to provide a structured volunteer experience without taking those costs away from the environmental and community programmes volunteers are here to support.

  • Placement matching against current project needs and your own skills.
  • Local orientation when you arrive in Sri Lanka.
  • ZeroPlastic programme coordination throughout your placement.
  • Project guidance from the team you are working alongside.
  • Participation acknowledgement or certificate, subject to verified participation.

Responsibility and ethics

How we decide what a volunteer does

  • Placements are based on real project needs, not on creating activity for visitors.
  • Community and artisan consent is required before any placement involving them proceeds.
  • Volunteers respect local culture, privacy and safeguarding rules at all times.
  • Participation certificates require verified attendance.
  • Activities may change due to weather, permissions, safety or community requirements.

We do not place volunteers where a local person should be employed, and we do not arrange visits to communities as an attraction. If a placement would not genuinely help, we will tell you and suggest something that would.

Questions

Before you apply

Who can apply?

International travellers, gap-year volunteers, university students, professionals and responsible travellers are all welcome to apply. Placements depend on suitability, dates and what is running while you are here.

Do I need environmental experience?

No. Many placements need practical skills such as photography, communications, design, business support, training or general project help rather than environmental qualifications.

Is volunteering with ZeroPlastic free?

No. ZeroPlastic's international volunteer placements are structured, hosted programmes. Fees start at US$350 per week and reduce for longer placements.

How much does it cost?

1 to 2 weeks: US$350 per week. 3 to 4 weeks: US$340 per week. 5 to 8 weeks: US$325 per week. 9 weeks or more: US$300 per week.

What is included?

A private homestay or host-family room, breakfast, lunch and dinner, airport pickup on arrival, orientation, placement coordination and programme support.

Is local transportation included?

No. Volunteers pay their own local transportation. ZeroPlastic can help explain local options and connect volunteers with known local taxi or tuk-tuk coordinators or available ride-hailing services where appropriate.

Where will I stay?

Normally with a selected local host family or homestay. Volunteers have a private room. Accommodation is intended to be clean, practical local accommodation rather than hotel accommodation, and standards vary between homes.

Are meals included?

Yes. Three meals per day are included. Breakfast may be Sri Lankan or Western style depending on the host. Lunch is normally Sri Lankan and dinner is generally a lighter Sri Lankan meal.

Can I participate in other ZeroPlastic projects?

Yes, where appropriate. In addition to your primary placement, you may choose to participate in other ZeroPlastic activities during your stay depending on your interests, location, availability and current projects.

Will I meet ZeroPlastic volunteers?

Can I work with a university club?

Yes. One of the six volunteer pathways specifically connects suitable international volunteers with ZeroPlastic university clubs where appropriate projects are active.

Can I work with schools or government institutions?

Potentially, through suitable Volunteers Academy, environmental education and capacity-building activities. Access depends on programme requirements, approvals and availability.

Can I work with hotels and tourism businesses?

The Sustainable Tourism in Sigiriya pathway is designed around engagement with suitable hotels, homestays, villas, cafes, restaurants and tourism-sector stakeholders in the Sigiriya area. Volunteers support and educate; they do not audit or certify businesses.

Can you guarantee a particular activity?

No. Placements are matched according to project needs, suitability, dates, permissions, safety and availability.

Is airport pickup included?

Yes. Arrival airport pickup is included. A departure transfer is not included unless separately arranged.

Can groups or universities apply?

Yes. Indicate the number of people travelling on the application form and describe the group in the contribution field. Group placements depend on project capacity and available accommodation.

Do I receive a certificate?

A participation acknowledgement or certificate is available subject to verified participation. Certificates require verified attendance.

Do I need a visa or travel insurance?

Visa, insurance and medical requirements depend on your nationality and your circumstances, and they change. ZeroPlastic does not provide legal, immigration or insurance advice. Check the current official requirements and arrange your own cover.

How are placements confirmed?

After you apply, ZeroPlastic reviews suitability and availability, then sends you the proposed placement and host details. The placement is confirmed only after you accept. The fees are published on this page, so you know the cost before you apply.

Bring Your Skills. Leave a Positive Impact.

Tell us your dates and what you can do. We will tell you honestly what is possible.
