Project Sanhitha marked an inspiring new chapter in strengthening youth-led environmental action across Sri Lankan universities. Designed to establish and expand ZeroPlastic Movement Clubs, the initiative focuses on empowering undergraduates to take meaningful action in sustainability through hands-on volunteer engagement. This vision came to life on November 4, 2025, at the Faculty of Technology, University of Sri Jayewardenepura, where over 120 enthusiastic students gathered for an impactful session titled “The Power of Volunteerism with ZeroPlastic Movement.”
The session was led by Mr. Nishshanka De Silva, Founder of the ZeroPlastic Movement, whose passion and expertise brought fresh perspective to the room. Organized in collaboration with the Society of Civil and Environmental Technology, the event blended learning, inspiration, and conversation—creating an atmosphere where young minds were encouraged to think boldly about their role in shaping a sustainable future.
Throughout the session, students were introduced to the core ideas of environmental responsibility and the growing need for youth involvement in addressing global ecological challenges. They learned about the mission and vision of the ZeroPlastic Movement, its ongoing national-level initiatives, and the wide range of volunteer opportunities available for young changemakers. Many participants shared their own thoughts and questions, turning the session into a vibrant exchange of ideas rather than a one-way discussion.
But the impact of Sanhitha extended far beyond the day’s program. By inspiring students to recognize their potential as environmental leaders on campus and beyond, the event set the stage for lasting change. Most importantly, it marked the beginning of a meaningful partnership between the University of Sri Jayewardenepura and the ZeroPlastic Movement.
With plans now underway to establish a ZeroPlastic University Club on campus, this collaboration promises to nurture a new generation of environmentally conscious leaders—driving sustainable practices, encouraging active volunteerism, and lighting the path toward a greener Sri Lanka.
