Plastic pollution is no longer just an environmental issue—it is a health, social, and economic challenge. While the world grapples with reducing single-use plastics, Sri Lanka faces its own unique set of hurdles: communities often lack awareness of the health risks of plastic, and sustainable alternatives are still limited in reach.
The ZeroPlastic Movement is stepping in to address these challenges through a science- and technology-driven approach. Our goal is simple yet ambitious: bring the science behind the plastic problem to every community, and scale up local solutions for a sustainable future.
Bringing Science to Communities
We are proud to be collaborating with 307 Science & Technology Officers (STOs) across Sri Lanka. These officers, deeply rooted in local communities, are trained to educate people about the health hazards of plastic, from chemical contamination to environmental degradation. Many villagers, shopkeepers, and schoolchildren have never fully understood how plastics affect their daily lives—and this is where our STOs make a difference.
By connecting science directly with communities, we ensure that awareness is not just theoretical but actionable. Villagers learn practical ways to reduce plastic use, adopt alternatives, and participate in creating a cleaner environment.
Innovating for Plastic Alternatives
Awareness alone is not enough. To achieve lasting impact, we are also driving technological innovation for plastic alternatives. Through this initiative, we aim to identify, test, and scale solutions developed by local innovators, empowering communities to produce sustainable products that can compete with conventional plastics.
From eco-friendly packaging to reusable household items, our focus is on solutions that are feasible, low-cost, and scalable. Trained STOs will work hands-on with local communities, guiding them from concept to production, ensuring that innovations make a tangible difference.
Join the Movement
This initiative is open to anyone passionate about science, technology, and sustainability. Whether you are a researcher, an innovator, or a community enthusiast, you can contribute to transforming plastic alternatives from ideas into real impact.
