Pure Knuckles – Empowering Communities to Protect the Knuckles Biodiversity

On 26th July 2025, the breathtaking Knuckles Mountain Range became the focus of a meaningful environmental mission called Pure Knuckles . Organized under the ZeroPlastic University of Peradeniya, the event aimed to promote responsible plastic usage and raise awareness about the urgent need to protect the region’s unique biodiversity. The program was supported by the Forest Department and involved 5 board members, 8 organizing committee members, and 8 volunteers.

The day’s activities, held from 8.30 AM to 10.30 AM, were divided into two impactful sessions: an awareness session and a cleanup campaign. During the awareness session, participants learned about the mission and goals of ZeroPlastic Movement, what plastic is and its common uses, the environmental impacts caused by plastic pollution such as harm to wildlife and long-term ecological damage, future problems if plastic misuse continues unchecked, and practical ways to reduce environmental harm by minimizing single-use plastics, using alternatives, and promoting responsible disposal.

Following this, the team took part in a cleanup session along the Knuckles trail, collecting many plastic wastes as well as other non-degradable waste items to help create a cleaner environment for wildlife and visitors. This hands-on activity reinforced the importance of the awareness shared earlier. At the conclusion, sincere thanks were given to the Forest Department and local supporters. Pure Knuckles showed how passionate youth, supported by knowledge and action, can be powerful protectors of nature, reminding us that change starts with awareness and grows through action.

Introducing the ZeroPlastic Commitment Standard – the world’s first certification focused solely on refusing and reducing single-use plastics.
