Project ReLeaf – A Greener Tomorrow Begins Today!

On the serene banks of the Polgolla River, something meaningful took root on 1st of June, 2025- a movement of restoration, awareness, and unity. Project ReLeaf, a bold initiative led by ZeroPlastic University of Peradeniya in collaboration with the Mahaweli Authority of Sri Lanka, brought together hearts, hands, and hopes to celebrate World Environment Day in the most impactful way.

Under the banner of “ReLeaf,” over 150 passionate volunteers united for a major cleanup campaign along the Polgolla riverbank. Armed with gloves, bags, and determination, they turned potential pollution into a symbol of environmental revival.

But this day wasn’t just about action – it was about awareness. A thought-provoking session inspired attendees to rethink their connection with nature, highlighting sustainable practices, the importance of river ecosystems, and how everyday choices shape a cleaner, greener Sri Lanka.

Adding a spark to the event was the presence of a Member of Parliament and acclaimed actor, Mr. Jagath Manuwarna, whose uplifting words reminded everyone of the power of civic responsibility.

This initiative was further empowered by the support of:

* Mahaweli Authority – Environment and Forest Conservation Division
* Open University of Sri Lanka

Together, they showcased the strength of united environmental commitment.

Releaf wasn’t just an event, it was a promise. A promise to give back to nature, to work hand-in-hand for conservation, and to build a legacy of environmental stewardship.

With every bag of waste collected and every mind awakened, Releaf became a landmark moment in the ongoing journey toward a sustainable future.
