GreenStep’26 Orientation Inspires New Wave of Environmental Volunteers
ZeroPlastic Kelaniya successfully launched its 2026 intake through GreenStep’26 Orientation, marking the start of a new phase of student-led environmental action at the University of Kelaniya. The program brought together newly recruited members and the organizing team to build awareness, share direction, and drive early engagement.
The event opened with a welcome speech by Vice President Chamod Rashmitha, who set the tone by outlining the importance of youth involvement in reducing plastic waste. The guest session was delivered by Nadeesha Senarathna, District Director of the ZeroPlastic Movement, who highlighted practical approaches to community impact and the role of student volunteers in creating change.
The Former Secretary shared insights from past experiences, giving participants a clear understanding of the club’s growth and achievements. A recap video presented key milestones from the previous term, followed by the introduction of the 2026/27 Executive Committee and Director Board. This helped new members identify leadership and communication channels within the club.
The Organizing Committee of GreenStep’26 managed the full execution of the event, with support from the Executive Board, Director Board, and Strategic Leadership Board. Key partnerships with the ZeroPlastic Movement strengthened the program’s reach and credibility.
Sessions on club structure and the ZeroPlastic app guided members on how to stay active and connected. A focused segment on volunteering explained how students can build skills, gain project experience, and contribute to environmental initiatives.
GreenStep’26 Orientation resulted in a well-informed and motivated volunteer base. The program increased member readiness, improved engagement, and reinforced ZeroPlastic Kelaniya’s role in promoting sustainable practices within the university and the wider community.
