Green Sri Lanka 3.0 – Phase 01

Green Sri Lanka 3.0 – Phase 01 is an environmental and educational initiative organized by the ZeroPlastic Movement of the University of Kelaniya. This project was conducted as a clean-up and awareness campaign at Adam’s Peak, with the aim of protecting its natural beauty and sacred environment while reducing plastic pollution in the area.

The project mainly targeted pilgrims visiting Adam’s Peak, local communities, youth, and environmental volunteers. A team of 20 volunteers actively participated in collecting plastic and non-biodegradable waste along selected pathways. In addition, awareness boards were placed to educate visitors on responsible waste management and encourage eco-friendly practices.

Through this initiative, selected areas around Adam’s Peak were cleaned, and awareness among visitors was significantly increased. The project benefited both direct and indirect groups, including pilgrims, local communities, future visitors, and the natural ecosystem. It also helped volunteers develop teamwork, leadership, and social responsibility skills.

Despite challenges such as difficult terrain, unpredictable weather, and limited resources, the project successfully contributed to reducing environmental pollution and promoting sustainable behavior. Overall, Green Sri Lanka 3.0 created a positive environmental and social impact while supporting the vision of building a cleaner and greener Sri Lanka.

Introducing the ZeroPlastic Commitment Standard – the world’s first certification focused solely on refusing and reducing single-use plastics.
