The Green Guardians initiative, organized by ZeroPlastic University of Ruhuna, has brought a refreshing and heartfelt approach to environmental education in the Matara region. By thoughtfully combining ecological awareness with the spiritual and ethical teachings of Buddhism, the programme helps children understand that protecting the planet is both a practical responsibility and a compassionate spiritual practice.
Conducted across several Dhamma schools in Matara, Green Guardians introduces sustainability in a simple, engaging, and meaningful way. Through interactive games, storytelling, discussions, and hands-on demonstrations in waste management, recycling, and conservation, young learners discover how their choices—big or small—can impact the environment. These creative methods make complex ideas relatable, helping even the youngest children grasp the importance of mindful consumption, reducing plastic use, and protecting biodiversity.
In Phase 03, the programme expanded across three Dhamma schools. While each school initially expected around 50 children and 5 teachers, the sessions collectively welcomed nearly 100 participants—an encouraging sign of growing community interest and responsibility. What stood out most was the warm interaction between facilitators and students, allowing children to ask questions freely, share experiences, and participate actively in every activity.
A passionate team of university volunteers from ZeroPlastic University of Ruhuna led the programme, serving as mentors who beautifully connected scientific knowledge with spiritual values. Their dedication not only strengthened the learning experience but also inspired children to feel proud of becoming young environmental “guardians.”
As the Green Guardians initiative continues to grow, it is nurturing a powerful network of environmentally conscious youth—children who will carry forward habits of care, responsibility, and sustainability into their homes, schools, and communities.
