A Successful Cleanup Drive at Beddegana Wetland Park
Organized by the ZeroPlastic Community – Open University of Sri Lanka
In collaboration with the National Movement | Held on World Environment Day 2025
The ZeroPlastic Community of the Open University of Sri Lanka successfully organized a cleanup drive at Beddegana Wetland Park on World Environment Day, as part of a special initiative assigned by the National Movement. This meaningful event brought together volunteers from the Open University of Sri Lanka and Cinnamon Hotels and Restaurants staff, working side by side to protect this vital ecosystem.
The event began at 9:00 AM with an informative awareness session that emphasized the importance of World Environment Day, introduced the work of the ZeroPlastic Community and the National Movement, highlighted the ecological value of the Beddegana wetlands, and outlined safety protocols.
The organizing committee had visited the site the day before to identify key areas requiring additional attention. On the day of the cleanup, the committee arrived at 6:00 AM to ensure early preparations and smooth coordination.
Volunteers were provided with tools and safety equipment, and organized into teams led by designated leaders. The efficient planning allowed for a well-structured operation across the park.
To support the hard-working volunteers, refreshments were served, including king coconuts and bakery items provided by Cinnamon Hotels and Restaurants. Their contribution extended beyond refreshments, as their staff actively took part in the cleanup activities alongside the students.
The project was completed by 11:30 AM, meeting all its goals with strong teamwork and dedication. The Beddegana Cleanup Drive was not only a successful environmental effort but also a powerful example of cross-sector collaboration and youth-led leadership in sustainability.
