On a Sunday afternoon in early May, a group of university students gathered in room Z0725 at the University of Moratuwa, not to discuss polymers or circuit boards, but to confront a question many of them had been quietly carrying: how do I present myself to the world beyond campus?

The session, titled ElevateU, unfolded on 4th May 2026 as part of the Professional Development Avenue of the Zero Plastic NDT Club at the University of Moratuwa, an initiative operating under the broader mission of the ZeroPlastic Movement. While the movement is widely recognized for its environmental conservation and sustainability efforts, its university-level clubs also invest in shaping well-rounded individuals who can lead change beyond ecological causes. ElevateU was a clear expression of that philosophy.

A Conversation About Growth

Dr. Ruchira Wijesena, a Senior Lecturer at ITUM, led the awareness session. Rather than delivering a conventional lecture, Dr. Wijesena guided participants through a candid exploration of personality development, confidence building, and professional presence. Students who attended described the experience as personal rather than academic. The focus was not on résumé formatting or interview scripts, but on the internal shifts required to step into professional life with authenticity and self-assurance.

For many in the room, this was a rare opportunity. Engineering and technology students often find their curricula packed with technical content, leaving little structured space for reflection on self-improvement and career readiness.
