Haritha Dam Ras 2026: ZeroPlastic Club Advances a Plastic Free Vesak in Matara
The Haritha Dam Ras Environmental Awareness Programme, organized by the ZeroPlastic Club of the University of Ruhuna as part of the Vesak celebrations in Matara, demonstrated a practical model for reducing single use plastic at religious gatherings. The initiative combined community engagement, sustainable alternatives, and responsible waste management to create measurable behaviour change among participants.
Practical Actions, Lasting Impact
Devotees who brought flowers for worship were provided with eco friendly flower holders made from coconut leaves in place of polythene bags. This low cost, culturally resonant alternative reduced reliance on disposable plastics during ritual activities and modeled a simple substitution that other communities can adopt.
In parallel, the programme invited devotees to hand over plastic bottles in exchange for Mee saplings. This exchange both incentivized collection of plastic waste and promoted tree planting as a direct environmental benefit. Collected plastics and polythene materials were routed to appropriate recycling channels, ensuring that outreach translated into concrete waste diversion rather than informal disposal.
Community Participation and Capacity Building
The event succeeded because of active local participation and volunteer leadership. Residents, temple visitors, volunteers, and student organizers engaged directly in collection, distribution, and participant education. Through hands on activities and clear messaging, attendees gained practical knowledge about waste management, recycling, and the environmental costs of single use plastics.

Partners and Acknowledgements
The programme benefited from local sponsorship and partnerships, with support from organisations including TEN PLUS BATTERY LAB (PVT) LTD, WET LOOK, Apple Mart, Colombo Hardware Store (PVT) LTD, ASIAN TILES & BATHWARE, Wedage Ice Cream, Matara Motors, and Cooperative Hotel Matara. Their involvement helped ensure resources for materials, saplings, and logistics.
Lessons for Replication
Several practical lessons emerge for organizations seeking to replicate this approach: choose culturally appropriate low waste alternatives, pair incentives with tangible environmental outcomes, secure recycling pathways before collection, and mobilize local volunteers for outreach and logistics. These elements help convert awareness into durable behaviour change.
Conclusion and Next Steps
Haritha Dam Ras 2026 delivered both awareness and action, reducing single use plastic at a major community event while encouraging tree planting and recycling. The ZeroPlastic Club approach offers a scalable template for religious and cultural festivals worldwide that seek to reduce plastic pollution while engaging communities in meaningful conservation efforts.
