Green Walk – No Plastic: Community Action for a Cleaner Environment

On 6 June 2026 the Green Walk – No Plastic brought together volunteers, campus partners, and local government to take direct action against plastic pollution. The cleanup began at the Yatinuwara Divisional Council and concluded in Peradeniya, with strong support from SIBA Campus and the Yatinuwara Divisional Council.

A total of 20 volunteers and 8 senior board members and directors participated in the walk. Over the two hour event participants collected plastic waste and litter along the route, filling 30 garbage bags and removing significant amounts of debris from public spaces. The Yatinuwara Divisional Council provided logistical support and refreshments for all participants, enabling smooth coordination on the day.

Beyond the material cleanup the project delivered measurable outreach and awareness outcomes. The visible presence of volunteers, coordinated collection effort, and conversations with passersby helped highlight the harms of single use plastics and the practical steps individuals can take to reduce plastic waste. Local residents reported appreciation for the cleaner public areas and expressed interest in continued community initiatives.

The Green Walk demonstrates how targeted, short duration actions can produce immediate environmental benefits while building longer term public engagement. Collaboration between educational institutions, community volunteers, and local government proved essential to the events success and created a replicable model for other communities seeking to reduce plastic pollution.

As communities and organizations plan future sustainability activities this project offers clear lessons: partner with local authorities, mobilize a mix of volunteers and leaders, and pair cleanup activity with public outreach to amplify impact. Continued collective action will be needed to protect local environments and promote a cleaner, greener future.
