Haritha Dhamma Pada

Haritha Dhamma Pada by ZeroPlastic Community of NISD

The ZeroPlastic Community of the National Institute of Social Development (NISD) successfully conducted Haritha Dhamma Pada Vesak Edition at the historic Lewangama Sri Sadanandarama Purana Tampita Viharaya. The initiative was organized with the objective of promoting environmental conservation, encouraging sustainable lifestyles, and reducing the use of single-use plastics by connecting environmental responsibility with the values and teachings of Buddhism.

The program brought together local community members, students, and devotees in a meaningful awareness session that highlighted the importance of protecting nature through mindful living. By integrating environmental education with spiritual guidance, the initiative created a unique platform for participants to reflect on their personal responsibility toward the environment and future generations.

A key feature of the event was a series of Dhamma discussions and environmental awareness sessions that explored the relationship between Buddhist principles and environmental stewardship. Participants learned about the growing challenges of plastic pollution, its impact on ecosystems and human well-being, and practical steps they can take to adopt the ZeroPlastic concept in their daily lives. The sessions emphasized mindful consumption, responsible waste management, and the importance of living in harmony with nature.

The event also showcased sustainable alternatives through the serving of Belimal, a traditional Sri Lankan herbal beverage. By offering refreshments without plastic packaging, the program demonstrated how communities can embrace healthier and environmentally friendly alternatives while preserving local traditions.

The project had a positive impact on the local community by inspiring environmentally responsible attitudes and encouraging individuals to become active contributors to environmental protection. It demonstrated how cultural and spiritual values can be powerful tools in promoting sustainability and driving positive behavioral change.

Introducing the ZeroPlastic Commitment Standard – the world’s first certification focused solely on refusing and reducing single-use plastics.
