CleanWaves – Ussangoda Beach Cleanup 2026: Together for a Cleaner Coast

On 23rd May 2026, the ZeroPlastic Club, University of Ruhuna successfully conducted CleanWaves – Ussangoda Beach Cleanup 2026 at Ussangoda Beach from 8.00 a.m. to 2.00 p.m. The project aimed to reduce coastal pollution, protect marine ecosystems, and promote environmental awareness among the community.

The initiative brought together 89 dedicated volunteers who worked collectively to clean the beach and restore its natural beauty. Through their efforts, a total of 278 kg of waste was removed, including 79 kg of plastic, 138 kg of glass, 52 kg of polythene, 8 kg of rigid foam and rubber, and 1 kg of pesticide bottles.

CleanWaves received valuable support from several key stakeholders, including the Divisional Secretariat, Ambalantota Pradeshiya Sabha, Coast Conservation Department, Ambalantota Police Station, and the Civil Security Department. The event was further honored by the presence of Mr. Nimal, Minister of the Ambalantota Pradeshiya Sabha, and Mr. Wipula, Chairman of the Ambalantota Pradeshiya Sabha.

Beyond the cleanup itself, the project served as an awareness campaign highlighting the dangers of plastic pollution and the importance of responsible waste management. Participants gained a deeper understanding of how improper waste disposal threatens marine life and coastal ecosystems.

CleanWaves demonstrated the power of community participation in creating positive environmental change. The project not only improved the condition of Ussangoda Beach but also inspired participants to continue promoting sustainable practices and environmental conservation for future generations.
